While searching the deepest recesses of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. See how the Alien movies are ranked by IMDb user ratings. Director Fede Álvarez enlisted the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Wherever possible, physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used to help ground the later visual effects work.

When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all of their blood floats through the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form a ball rather than flowing in long, flat chunks like in the movies. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and turns ominous, like in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the film’s opening scene.

there are a lot of references to the various films in the series, through subtle elements, characters or plot threads)… It’s obviously a product of our modern age (filming techniques, effects) while still retaining a lot of the classic atmosphere and tone of the Alien films… The visual language is overall pretty excellent, with some really striking shots here and there (great framing and composition)… Yes, it may disappoint some who have a sense of ownership of the series, as it definitely expands and explores quite a bit of history.

Plus, the lead actress (Cailee Spaeny) carries the film very well, with quiet power, subtlety, and intensity… So if you’re looking for an Alien movie that uses most of the old ingredients while also reintroducing and/or reinventing them, and exploring beyond what we’re used to… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
