Yet, the area was occupied by German forces
Chronology
Through the eyes of a strong-willed woman, Irena Gut tells the remarkable story of the human spirit and its triumph over devastating tragedy as she risked her life to save a generation of Jews from the horrors of the Holocaust. Although this Canadian film was released in Canada to a much wider audience than the typical Canadian film, for some reason its distributor, Elevation Pictures, decided not to give the film a significant marketing budget. As a result, the film performed poorly at the box office and was pulled from most theaters in its third week or at the end of its run. (approx. 2 minutes) The opening credits announce that the action takes place on the eastern side of the Polish border. This area of Poland was occupied by the Soviet Union.

It is based on the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, who vowed during World War II, “If I could save a life, I would.” The film was directed by Louise Archambault and adapted for the screen by Dan Gordon, who was the playwright of the hit Broadway play. Cinema has been used many times over the years to shed light on the many people who selflessly protected Jews from the Nazis. Some of these heroes saved one life, while others saved hundreds.
The film begins in 1939, when Germany invades Warsaw
The courage of these people deserves to be remembered. A bomb falls on the hospital where Irena (Sophie Nelisse) works. She is Polish, not Jewish, so she is sent to work in a munitions factory. Because of her character traits, she is recognized by senior German officer Rugmer (Dougray Scott, MY WEEK WITH MARILYN, 2011) and transferred to a supervisory role over the Jews working in a hotel laundry. When Rugmer reassigns her, this time as a housekeeper in his personal villa, she learns that the Jews in the laundry are being sent to a concentration camp. We are captivated by Irena’s work to rescue and then hide these twelve people.

Obviously, in doing so, she puts herself and the hidden Jews in danger, but also Rugmer, who would surely be shot if they were discovered in his home. The humor here is lacking. In fact, one of the most horrific scenes you will ever see on film occurs. It is a devastating moment, and one I will not soon get out of my mind. In a rare display of levity, Irena befriends an elderly servant named Schultz (Andrzej Seweryn, SCHINDLER’S LIST, 1993), who advises her to keep a low profile and “know nothing.” The old “Hogan’s Heroes” The series will appreciate the connection The current issue of anti-Semitism gives this a slightly contemporary feel, as does the abortion debate among the hiding people. At first we can’t help but wonder if this was for dramatic effect, although the answer becomes quite clear in the end.

Sophie Nelisse was exceptional in THE BOOK THIEF, and she’s great here, playing Irena Gut Opdyke, who is later awarded the title of Righteous Among the Nations… The epilogue reveals much of what happened, and all of it leaves us with the utmost respect for this quietly brave woman, who will be held on April 15 and April 16, 2024.
