The city of New Rome faces a duel between Cesare Catilina, a brilliant artist who advocates for a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalty is divided between her father and her beloved. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to his financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after 30 hours of second unit filming and table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey, but the project was scrapped after attacks on 9/11, because the scene from the script (page 166) is "predicted" attacks. Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and did not resume development until 2019. At 9:40 PM, Catiline’s character utters the phrase "Holy Jesus Christ!" in wonder. However, within the universe, the city of New Rome emerges from a culture based on Roman mythology (example: 54:47, dedication to Vesti; 01:55:51, someone says "Cronus’ will", or at 01:56:49, a statue of Saturn is prominently displayed, while there are many more depictions of Roman deities) . In this universe, Christianity does not exist. There is no reason for Catiline to use the phrase "Holy Jesus Christ!" in such a context.. Cesar Catilina: *You* want to help me?Julia Cicero: Yes. And, well, I… well, I want to learn. Cesar Catilina: And you think one year of… medical school gives you the right to plow through the wealth of my Emersonian mind? Julia Cicero: Gives me the right? So much is bad, it’s almost brilliant, the kind of so-terrible-it’s-brilliant nightmare that future cult fans will rave about. And you know what? I respect Coppola like hell for it. The guy is a cinematic legend who simply decided to throw all caution (and coherence) into the wind and go completely crazy like a scientist on this. It’s a magnificent, unfiltered mess from the mind of a genius who has clearly stopped caring what anyone thinks. Bravo, you magnificent lunatic! 👏🏻.
