The director of the previous two films, Paul King, decided not to film this installment
Chronology
Paddington returns to Peru to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, now residing at the Retired Bear House. With the Brown family in tow, an exciting adventure begins when a secret plunges them into an unexpected journey.
Cast: Graham Norton and Guests: Billy Crystal/Emily Mortimer/Hugh Bonneville/Pharrell Williams/Michael Kiwanuka (2024)
However, he suggested the idea for this third film and was involved as an executive producer. Paddington in Peru is by far the weakest part of the trilogy, the absence of Paul King and Simon Farnaby is clearly felt, but it is still a delightful third part that doesn’t lose an bit of soul and brings everything planned in the first act to a neat conclusion thanks to a satisfying third act.
Ben Whishaw remains infinitely valuable with another perfect vocal performance, so Paddington continues to be a much-needed cinematic balm
It’s a consistently funny adventure that never forgets the immigration story behind it as Paddington struggles to reconcile his past and future. Hugh Bonneville is genuinely funny as he tries to be braver, and Emily Mortimer is a fine replacement even in the absence of Sally Hawkins.
There’s plenty of farce here, as always, and it always escalates in unexpected ways
Antonio Banderas gets to do everything Dial of Fate prevented him from doing, and has fun doing it, and Olivia Colman as the suspicious singing nun is another great moment. Dougal Wilson’s direction brings enough whimsy, borrowing ideas from the previous films and some inventive new ones, as well as some well-placed references to other films.
